Kruising erkend door Ierse Kennelclub

Het heeft wel niks met labradors te maken, maar wel met de discussie in de internationale rashondenfokkerij over inteelt en de te smalle genenpoels van sommige rassen. Gelukkig lijkt het tij nu toch hier en daar te keren en worden sommige kennelclubs verstandig. De Ierse Kennelclub gaat importkruisingen tussen twee Ierse settervariëteiten erkennen (de roodwitte x de ierse), om zo hun gezondheid te vergroten:

´The Irish Kennel Club has accepted that crossbreeding Irish Red and White Setters with Irish Setters may become necessary in the future to preserve the genetic health of the breed.
In accordance with Reciprocal Agreements with other national Kennel Clubs, the Kennel Club will accept registrations for imported Irish Red & White Setters that have been produced by crossing Irish Red and White Setters with Irish Setters, providing they meet all the current requirements for UK registration and providing they are clear of hereditary condition GPRA rcd1.
The Kennel Club will transpose the identification system adopted in Ireland (X1, X2, X3) with its own asterisk identification system, to identify the crossbred generations.

Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Secretary, said: “The Kennel Club supports crossbreeding programmes that improve breed health and the Irish Kennel Club decided there was a need to recognise dogs that may be born from such a cross, in preparation for the need to preserve genetic diversity and to prevent associated health problems from surfacing within the breed. The success of any cross programme can be determined by breeders and breed clubs themselves through their future decisions to incorporate these dogs into their bloodlines.”
